Beeing a member of the World Fair Trade Organization or International Fairtrade Association, means that we are, amongst others, comitted to continuing education and “on the job training” of our workforce. From 14th to 17th November we held our seminar for all our shop managers. Present were not only our own – TTC – sales crew, but also the shop managers from our partner organizations “Thabita Handicrafts” , “New Life Center”, “Akha Craft Center” and “WEAVE”.

We spent 3 days working very hard to cover all aspects of sucessfully managing a sales shop.
Mrs. Mitos and Mrs. Tonette from WEAVE Foundation, acted as moderators, while TTC’s own Mr. Harry acted as translator, to enshure that everybody understood everything that was said.

On the third day Mrs. Ramona Ramos director of World Fair Trade Organization Asia also appeared as a guest speaker, to further enhance our knowledge of fair trade practices.

All participants agreed that they learned a lot, and we plan to organize another similar event next year.

Our Hammocks at Mee Choke Plaza Chiang Mai

Mr. Barrie Greyson is something like the “Godfather” of our Sitting Hammck. Many years ago, starting from scratch, he, together with our own Peter Schmid developped the new improved design and weaving technique, that make our sitting hammock the best available anywhere.

Now he is back, and selling our hammocks at Mee Choke Plaza untill Sunday December 31, 2011.... But in his usual style, just selling hammocks is not enough for him, Mr. Barrie is also working on a completely new project, namely a whole lineup of new and superbly beautyfull hammock stands, for all those, who untill now had no place to hang their hammock. Here a picture of one of the prototypes. More are on their way……

TTC Will Join the BIG+BIH Fair in October 2011

BIG-BIH Fair 2011, Organized by the Department of Export Promotion in Thailand, Bangkok International Gift Fair & Bangkok International House-ware Fair 2011 is coming up, once again, this October. TTC's MD at UNESCO Meeting

On May 19. our Managing Director, at the invitation of UNESCO regional unit for Social and human sciences also attended a meeting between UNESCO and a total of 12 NGO's and charitable organzations. Present for this informal exchange of opinions were several big name NGO's such as Amnesty International, Kenan Institute, and Habitat for Humanity, as well as some lesser known organizations. Each participant got a chance to introduce her/his organization. After that a lively exchange of opinions with main subject "social sciences" took place. It was also a good occasion to share NGO experiences, and to discuss problems connected to NGO work.

Message from our Managing Director

Dear Friends,

Thai Tribal Crafts has just concluded its financial year and each of you has contributed to these results. The decline of the world economy, as well as a very unstable Thai political situation in 2010, has continued to affect our operation. We have struggled once again this year, even though our sales total came to $294,207.29, representing an increase of $9,015.24, or approximately 3.16 percent, over a year ago. These sales also enabled us to purchase $235,339.77 worth of products from our producer groups and other TTC cooperative partners, which is good news.

TTC must try to sell more in order to buy more from our artisans. Therefore, in 2010, we continued and expanded our local markets by opening a new Fair Trade Shop in Chiang Rai City in cooperation with Akha Crafts, one of our producer groups. We participated in the Bangkok International Gift & Bangkok International Houseware (BIG+BIH) fairs in the hope of making more contacts with international buyers. We developed our social media networks, such as Network Blog, Facebook and YouTube, to get more contacts, as well as to provide information to our existing customers for use in their own marketing strategies. In spite of these efforts, due to the weak economy and the Thai political situation, our actual sales turnover was well below our expectations. Having publicized in these new venues, we hope that our sales will increase and we will be able to buy more from our artisans.
As a certified member of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO), promoting Fair Trade is our goal. The following activities have taken place in the past year to promote Fair Trade in Northern Thailand: 1) We were invited by Chiang Mai University to present our organization and its Fair Trade activities during a Social Enterprises workshop; 2) Far Eastern University sent their business students to TTC to conduct a case study on Fair Trade; 3) Rajmonkol University sent their students majoring in fabric design to do product development for social enterprises by using the principles of Fair Trade; 4) and we presented our organization and its Fair Trade activities to many overseas students and visitors.

I wish to thank our artisans for their beautiful handicrafts. The customers and overseas partners who have made purchases that have allowed the employment of many needy tribal artisans are also much appreciated. I extend my thanks to our staff for their hard work and commitment to our mission, as well as to the Board of Thai Tribal Crafts for its support and direction.

In all we do, our aim is to raise the economic level of the tribal people of Northern Thailand by giving them regular orders at fair prices, increasing their market opportunities, and providing knowledge in business principles. These tools help them to escape the poverty in which they live.

Lawa young man at La Oob village

The Lawa live in villages in two provinces of northern Thailand, Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son, and have a population of about 16,000 people. They traditionally supported their families by engaging in slash-and-burn agriculture, but now need other sources of income, as the old way of agriculture is no longer possible.

Thai Tribal Craft has been working with the Lawa people from Ban La Oob since 1996. This village is about 250 kilometers west of Chiang Mai, located in Mae La Noi district of Mae Hong Son province. They make beautiful silver products and black hand-woven cloth with tie-dye designs. There are 12 producers of silver earrings, bracelets and necklaces, and 20 weavers who weave black cloth with tie-dye designs from which TTC makes a number of products, such as vests, purses, small accessories, travel bags etc….

Nowadays, many young tribal people leave their villages to go to the city, seeking jobs and a better income. Some of them stay in the city after they graduate, hoping to earn money to spend on an easier lifestyle than the one they have in their villages. This is happening to many young people in La Oob village.

Narongchai Pratheeppoj, 25 years old, is a young Lawa man from Ban La Oob who decided to take over the role that his father, Khampan Pratheeppoj, now holds as a representative of the La Oob silver producer group. After Narongchai finished high school, he decided to stay in the village and work as a silversmith with the La Oob silver producer group founded by his father. “I would like to preserve our traditional silver work by teaching this skill to the generations to come. I want to create an income opportunity for the villagers here so that they do not need to move into the city,” said Narongchai. As agriculture is the main income for the people in the village, Narongchai is also working on growing rice, cabbage, corn, and coffee for their own consumption and working on the silver jewelry production when the group has orders or when they have free time. “I can use the money that I earn from making jewelry and invest it in my agricultural work by buying organic fertilizer, seeds, etc. Working on silver handicrafts is very important to us because it helps our cash flow and we do not need to borrow money from the financial agency at a high interest rate,” said Narongchai.

Narongchai is now assuming his father’s role by being a representative of the group. He comes to the Thai Tribal Crafts head office to pick up orders, collect payments and to make contact with several shops in Chiang Mai. He also leads the group in participation in the OTOP fair organized by the Thai Government.

With the advice and cooperation of Thai Tribal Crafts, the group lead by Narongchai has established an eco-tourism and home-stay program in the village. The aims are to promote their beautiful silver work, explore the real life story of the artisans behind the Lawa silver products, and provide extra income to the families of the group. Thai Tribal Crafts Fair Trade also develops Eco Fair Trade Tour programs for those who love Fair Trade.

La Oob Village

As travellers are welcomed into the La Oob community with dignity and respect in the context of a family atmosphere, and have the opportunity to try on the silver products, the group hopes that many will gain a better understanding of the impact that Fair Trade has made in La Oob village and leave with special memories of their time there.

In all Narongchai’s efforts, he is trying to create more income opportunities for the group and lift up the living standards of the La Oob villagers.

Lahu Weaving

There are approximately 102,876 Lahus now living in Thailand. The four sub-tribes of Lahu are the Lahu Na, Lahu Sheh Leh, Lahu Shi and Lahu Nyi and they all produce a diversity of designs. Lahu women are skilled in weaving cloth both on back strap and foot treadle looms. Lahu weaving is unique in that the pattern appears on only one side of the cloth. Lahu women also produce delicate and colorful patchwork trims. Lahu men make baskets, crossbows and musical instruments. Below VDO clip is showing Lahu women at work (weaving) :

Lisu New Year Celebration

A group of Thai Tribal Crafts producers from Lisu tribe celebrating their New Year. The celebration held in Ban Sri Dong Yen, Mae Rim district, Chiang Mai. Traditional dancing, traditional singing as we as other activities presenting during the ceremony.

There are approximately 38,299 Lisus living in Thailand. The Lisu of northern Thailand make their clothing from coloured cloth stitched into outfits trimmed with row upon row of multicolored stripes of cloth, applique patchwork, tassels, and beadwork. The wealthier wear massive amounts of hand-crafted silver ornaments for festive occasions. Lisu men produce crossbows, bird and animal traps, musical pipes and bamboo flutes.

Mae Muang Noi (Lahu) Village

Ban Muang Noi is a Lahu Na Christian village located in Mae Ai district, Chiang Mai province and it is about 195 kilometers away from Chiang Mai city. The village was set up about 35 years ago and there was no public services at the beginning and the village could be reached by walking from the highway about 25 kilometer from the village. The village has 105 households with a population 750 people, 275 men, 325 women and 150 youths and children. TTC started working with the artisans of this village 20 years ago. The items made by these artisans includes Shoulder Bags, Plain cloth of various width and length, Pattern woven cloth, Christmas runners and wall hanging made of hand woven cloth on back-strap loom.

Currently, the village can be reached by car all year round and living condition is much better now. Each household has a limited size of land that the can grow rice, corn and beans but their earning from agriculture is not enough for all year round. Therefore, villagers need supplementary income. Some of them go to work in different cities in Thailand. About 80% of the village income is from agriculture, 10% from sales of handicrafts, all sold to Thai Tribal Crafts and 10% from others.

Villagers are busy working in their fields from May through July. Then they will be free from agricultural activities from August to middle of October. Busy again for harvesting from middle of October through the end November. Most of villagers are free from field activities during the period from December through April. Therefore, the artisans normally work on handicrafts during this period.

Lahu Naw

This Lahu musical gourd pipe (Naw) is made of a gourd inserted with five bamboo tubes of different lengths tuned to the pentagonic scale. At the base of each tube is a finely crafted reed. These instruments are made in various sizes, used to play various tones. Traditionally, this gourd pipe is used by boys as a courting music, and to send messages from one village to another. Lahu Sheh Leh, one of the Lahu sub-groups, blow the gourd pipe in healing ceremonies. During the bridge ritual, as they believe that God brought the first man and woman out of a gourd, and feel that it gives God a special pleasure to hear this music, one of the men blows the pipe almost constantly. The gourd pipe is also used to play music during the New Year festival.

Lisu Glasses Case

Lana Cafe

Lanna cafe is a non-governmental organization (NGO), initialted in 2001 by Wakachiai Project, NOG which has been importing coffee (in accordance with the fair trade standards) from Hilltribe growers in Northern Thailand (Lanna) since 1997.

The objective is to introduce high quality Thai Highland coffee to more people, not only in Thailand, but worldwide, and to assist the coffee producers of the Thai Hill tribes who do not have direct access to the market. All of the coffee is purchased directly from the growers group (Thai Tribal Highland Arabica Coffee Production and Marketing Cooperative), and certified by FLO (Fairtrade Labeling Organizations International).

Lanna cafe is a member of Thai Tribal Highland Arabica Coffee Production and Marketing Cooperative to establish Lanna Cafe. The cooperative is facilitated through the Integrated Tribal Development Program (ITDP); a Thai based NGO working with Thai Tribal group and is a member of Fairtrade Labeling Organizations International (FLO). Strict quality control measures are undertaken by the cooperative. Berries are hand picked and optimum maturity, wet processed and sun dry by the producer in their villages. Dry bean are hulled and graded by machine and culled by hand to insure a high quality superior flavored product. The roasting and packaging of Lanna cafe is continuously monitored to maintain quality. Lanna cafe supports sustainable indigenous farming to promote local development in Thailand Hill tribe villages.

Wong Wiang Handicrafts, one of TTC cooperative parnter

Wongwiang Handicraft was established in 1987 by Mr. Oun Wongwiang and his friends, who were leprosy patients at McKane Rehabilitation Centre www.mckeanhosp.org Chiang Mai which was founded by Dr. James McKean (1860 - 1949), one of Presbyterian missionaries from the United States and a handful of western physicians working in Chiang Mai to help and develop western medical clinic in this region.

After recovering from leprosy illness, Mr. Oun Wongwiang and his friends realized the hardship and poorness of former leprosy patients and started to generate their ideas to implement handicrafts business which they learned while they were in McKane Rehabilitation Centre. It was aimed to improve the life quality and living standard of ex-leprosy patients and their families by providing vital and sustainable incomes through the sales of handcrafted woodcarving products.

Eventually, the group has been developing their skills and productivities in making handicrafts to match with the global market needs. Today, with the experiences of more than 20 years, 20 families of former leprosy patients who are living in villages around Chiang Mai, Lampoon and Lampang provinces are involving in this Wongwiang Handicraft projects.

Objectives:

TTC Work At Huay Ja Khan Village

Huay Ja Khan Village

Ban Huay Ja Khan is a Lahu Christian village located at about 210 kilometer north of Chiang Mai city. It was set up about 35 years ago and there was no public services at the beginning and the village could be reached by walking from the highway about 8 kilometer from the village.. The village has 105 households with a population 800 persons, 200 men, 400 women and 200 youths and children. TTC started working with craft women about 25 years ago. The items made by this producer group includes Shoulder Bags, Plain cloth of various width and length, Pattern woven cloth, Christmas runners and wall hangings, hand woven by back-strap loom.

There are several public services now. The road to the village is paved, piped water supply and electricity is available. There is a primary school with 320 students, 12 teachers. Children from nearby villages are also attending this school. There is a student hostel supported by the Compassion International. There is a clinic but there is no fulltime health worker.

Each household has a limited size of land that the can grow rice, corn and beans but their earning from agriculture is not enough for all year round. Therefore, villagers need supplementary income. Some of them go to Chiang Mai city to work at different places, such as daily labor at the construction sites, Restaurants, Karaoke etc, and some remain in the village and involving crafts making, such as 25 producers whom TTC is supporting. Agriculture is still the main job for the villagers and 50% of family income is from agriculture products and domestic animals, 30% from labor and 20% from sales of handicrafts. Out of the income from handicrafts sales 79% from TTC and 21% from annual handicrafts sale to the Royal Project.

About ten households have no land for agriculture and their income is mainly come from the wage of daily labor. As for TTC producers, they have no market beside TTC. Quality control is done by individual producer in accordance with the instruction of TTC buyer. They have problem of fund to invest when they receive order for quantity weaving. Color availability is some time a problem for producers. If the order is too small it effect the travel expenses of the producers. To summarize TTC have to work closely with producer group to help solve their problems.

This training held among the producers called Huay Luk group, a women group of Hmong tribe who are living in Huay Luk village, Chiang Dao district, Chiang Mai province. The village which is located in the north of Chiag Mai city, approximately 200 km far from Chiang Mai city. It is more than a year that TTC has been working with this group and TTC is trying to promote their handicrafts to international market. Therefore the group need training to build up their capacity in both quality and skills so that they could be ready to be a group of producers that can be able to support and produce the order for export. TTC will provide all the necessary equipments and materials as well as food for the participant. We are hopping that the training and our future orders will be benefit the producers to have a better life, more higher education opportunity to their children, lift up their economic and living standard. More over they will be able to develop their village and the community.

Running a good business is important in order to provide more jobs for our artisans so that they can make extra income for their families as well as increase sales for the company to strengthen its business operations for the long term. To do so, the TTC has a policy of training producers in how to do business so that they will have the capability to exit the circle of poverty and reach new economic levels. At the same time, as a World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) certified member, advocating Fair Trade and bringing awareness to our stake holders and others in the community are among our highest priorities.

To extend the impact or our mission of helping the needy people as well, as the above-mentioned role, we believe that by working as a network, there will be more effective results. Therefore, we have the following objectives for working with our 11 cooperative partners:

1. Trading together: Promoting joint trade opportunities by using the facilities and technology available to TTC such as online sales through the website and offline by selling together at TTC’s shops.

2. Do capacity building together: All the partners will send their representatives to do capacity building together through training programs in management, product development, marketing, and financial management. Moreover, TTC will provide market trends and new product development ideas to its cooperative partners.

3. Promoting Fair Trade together: We believe that by working together as a network, we will be more effective in our Fair Trade promotion. This will be achieved through opening joint shops with some of our partners, such as the Chiang Mai Fair Trade Shop (jointly with Lanna Café), the Mae Sot Fair Trade Shop (jointly with WEAVE) and the Chiang Rai Fair Trade Shop Chiang Rai (jointly with the Akha Craft Center). These new shops not only benefit these partners, but open up greater opportunities for others in their geographic areas who are committed to Fair Trade and helping the underprivileged to have outlets for their products on a consignment basis. Those being assisted through these programs include those working with refugees, AIDS victims, young women at risk, and poor ethnic families in remote areas along the Thai-Burma border. By expanding the number of shops we have, and branching out into new geographic areas, we increase the exposure to Fair Trade exponentially.

TTC has had good discussions and completed a successful project with Chiang Mai University where a session in Fair Trade has been offered as one of the pieces of its international business curriculum since 2009. In addition, TTC also meets many international students during their study tours and conducts interchanges on the nature of the fair trade business and their ideas for promoting fair trade in Thailand and abroad.

TTC has also been getting more involved in eco-tourism by offering fair trade tours since late 2009. More fair trade tours are being developed and scheduled for 2010. By implementing all the objectives mentioned above, TTC believes its role in the fair trade business will benefit people in need as well as educate more people about fair trade, thereby helping to create fair and just business practices and a brighter tomorrow.

Real life story of Kalaya

There are some specific moments in everyone’s life that may lead to a successful life or leave one in desperate straits. Living in Huay Luak village in the northern part of Thailand as a hill-tribe woman is something that can create great insecurity and instability. A hill tribe woman’s life can involve moving into new communities to search for new possibilities, and often this process has to be repeated again and again. One of the unheard stories of such a woman is about Mrs. Kalaya or Kao (Hmong name) who once lived such a life; today she has turned into a leader of the Hmong Artisans Group and has become a world standard handicrafts producer. Back in 2000, Kalaya was living with her husband in Huay Luak, a Hmong village, where they farmed, planted crops, and did other agriculture. Being farmers, they spent most of their time together farming until the day they met with the most unfortunate event of their lives.

There was one evening when a man approached Kalaya’s husband on his way back home from the farm and asked him to do him a favour. Could he bring a small bag to the village by his car? It is normal for villagers to help each other whenever they are in need. So, he simply accepted, with just the aim of helping a man; it was no problem at all to put the bag in the car. But unfortunately, he didn’t anticipate that the bag would bring him trouble and separate him from his lovely wife, Kalaya. After a few hours of driving, the police stopped the car at a check point for security purposes and found yaba (amphetamines) in the small bag which was given to him by the man. There is no way out, no release, if yaba is found in one’s hand. There is a strong penalty when the drug laws are broken, and Kalaya’s husband was sentenced to 30 years in prison when the judge made his final decision. It was that day that this lovely couple had to part from one another and Kalaya begun to struggle through life with 3 children. Indeed, she tried in many ways to prove the true story about how her husband received the yaba in order to get her husband released from prison. She spent lots of money beyond what she could afford. She sold the farm and land that they owned, but nothing changed; everything was gone and she faced a worse life in Huay Luak village.

In 2003, Kalaya made a decision to start a new life in Lamphun City, twenty kilometers from Chiang Mai. She passed through this dark period of her life by selling flowers, sleeping beside the road just near the market, and earning a small amount of money, just enough to live hand to mouth for her family. On a certain day, Harry (Managing Director of Thai Tribal Crafts) met Kalaya unexpectedly in Lamphun while
he was there on some business issue. Harry learned of the pitiful life of this Hmong woman of one of the hill tribes in northern Thailand. Then he asked if she had some skill in making Hmong traditional handicrafts. He came to find out that she was good at making Hmong Batik. Knowing of the impressive skill of Kalaya, Harry suggested that she return back to Huay Luak and become a TTC producer instead of living in Lamphun in this awful life. He promised that TTC would try its best to provide orders in the future. Kalaya was very pleased to hear this and agreed to do what Harry recommended.

In 2006, Kalaya returned to Huay Luak where she applied herself with strong commitment and began a new life for her family once more. She also became a team leader of the Huay Luak Hmong Producer Group. Today, with training and the dedication of Thai Tribal Crafts Fair Trade, this group has been producing world standard Hmong Batik cloth and getting regular orders through the TTC market channels. Among the thirty thousand Hmong people living in Thailand, the Huay Luak group enjoys living in a village less expensively and is able to preserve the dignity of their hill tribe roots.

Thai Tribal Crafts carries a range of clothing that reflects the tribal Lahu origins in a fusion of traditional patterns and classic styling, including T-shirts, jackets and these vests.

Lahu Vest

Thai Tribal Crafts is a self-help marketing agency established in 1973 with the main goal to provide opportunities for improving the quality of life of the tribal people living in Northern Thailand.

These vests have been crafted in the Lahu tribal community. The Lahu have about 73,500 people living in Northern Thailand. The Lahu women do unusual weaving and patch work trims while the men are skilled in producing musical instruments and other items from bamboo.

The Lahu population can be divided into four major sub-groups: Lahu Nyi, Lahu Na, Lahu Sheh Leh and Lahu Shi. Lahu Sheh Leh and Lahu Nyi still wear their traditional outfits, whereas Lahu Na and Lahu Shi tend to dress like Northern Thai people and wear their traditional clothing only on festive occasions like weddings and New Year's festival.

Lahu people traditionally grew their own cotton, but this activity is no more possible due to the land limitation: nowadays, they purchase it at the market.

Lahu women weave cloth using back-strap and foot-treadle looms. Then they decorate the cloth, with various techniques: Lahu Na and Lahu Shi mostly use patch-work appliqu?, whereas Lahu Shi and Lahu Nyi make embroidery. All groups use bands of cloth and silver half-sphere buttons for embellishment.

Tribal People with Crafts Skills, Issue 5

The Karen people are one of the seven major tribes with whom Thai Tribal Crafts (TTC) has been working since TTC was established in 1973. Each tribal group has its own distinctive crafts. Karen women are skilled in both plain and patterned weaving. They also use embroider on their traditional costumes for both men and women. They also produce shoulder bags.

Mrs. Somsri Chairatsamphan or Naw Ti Prway is a 49 year old Karen woman. Living in the Mae Sariang area of Northern Thailand. As a child she received no formal education. However, her mother taught her how to weave the beautiful Karen cloth on the traditional back strap loom. After she married she learned methods of traditional embroidery from her friends. Her husband is a soldier in the Thai military.

This is Somsri's sotry. After she married Somsri moved to Nong Pak Nam village in MaeSariang and it was there that she started to weave for the local co-operative group. Sorsri and her husband have 3 children and the income from her weaving has helped with the education of her children. Her eldest daughter has graduated from a university in Chiang Mai; her son studied High School and is now married with his own family; her yangest daughter is going to graduate from University this year.

The income she received from her weaving as really helped her family. Without this income her children would not have received an education. Somsri and her husband do not own any land and her husband's income is not enough to support the family.

Somsri said " I am very glad and proud of my weaving because it has been helping our family to have a better life. Our children also received the chance to further their studies to University level. I will continue my weaving because it is a part of my life".

Tribal People with Crafts Skills, Issue 4

Lahu is one of the six major tribes with whom Thai Tribal Crafts Fair Trade Co., Ltd (TTCFT) has been working since 1973 when TTCFT was established. Each tribal group has its own distinctive crafts. Lahu women are skilled of weaving with design shown on one side only, embroidy and patchwork which they used their traditional costumes of both man an women as well as shoulder bags.

Mrs. Lume, age 43, with formal education of grade 3, learned the methods of traditional embroidery and patchwork skills from her mother during her age of teenager and she learned the method of weaving with design shown on one side only on a back-strapped loom from her mother-in-law after she married to her husband. Her husband is pastor of the local small Lahu church called Huay Jakhan about 75 kilometers north of Chiang Mai. She became a full time weavers in 1996.

The church cannot pay her husband (pastor) regular salary and the family depend on the income from sale of crafts made by her, which represents about 70% of total family annual income. Currently, she serves as the representative of 30 producers group in her village. She has two children, a son and a duaghter. She could manage to send both of her children to regular school for formal education from her income of handicrafts sale. Her son has just graduated a university degree in Physical Education and her daughter graduated from junior vocational college.

Tribal People with Crafts Skills, Issue 3

Despite the fact that six tribal people share many common features (they are all minorities, all farmers, all live in villages), they have developed cultures unlike each other, and become distinct ethnic groups. Each tribal group has its own distinctive crafts, most obviously observed in their clothing. The traditional clothes of the Karen women are decorated with examples of the embroidery and tie-dyed woven skills of Karen women.

Mrs. Marasri Wanachoke, 65, learned the methods of traditional tie-dye weaving, embroidery and natural dye skills from her mother when she was young. She loved these skills since she was young and she had the intention to use her skills to support her family and her neighbors. She married to a young man from her own tribe in 1958, but her husband died in 1968 leaving with her three sons. She raised her sons with difficulty through her limited earning from sales of handicrafts to Thai Tribal Crafts and local outlets. She became a full time weaver in 1969.

Village women, including Marasri, with minimal formal education have learned to upgrade their traditional skills to make quality products for Thai Tribal Crafts for its international markets. In 1970 Marasri opened a small craft shop at Ban Pong, in Mae Sariang district of Mae Hong Son, about 280 kilometers west of Chiang Mai. In the following year, working with women of the local church and seeking the advise of a missionary working amongst the Karen, she founded a weavers group for the Mae Sariang area using her shop in Ban Pong as the center for the group.

In 1973, on the official opening of its shop in Chiang Mai city, Thai Tribal Crafts accepted the Ban Pong producer group as one of its producer groups and provides orders for the producers. Currently, the orders from Thai Tribal Crafts provide part time employment to over 300 Karen weavers in Ban Pong and surrounding villages.

Each tribal group has its own distinctive crafts, most obviously observed in their clothing and jewelry. Their fine skills can also be seen in their musical instruments, basketry, tools, utensils, weavings, needle-works and applique.

The missionaries working among tribal people in late 1960s geared to the improvement of the economic situation of tribal people by founding non-profit marketing agency together with the Karen and Lahu Churches in Thailand in 1973. Thai Tribal Crafts has become a non-profit self-help trade organization for benefit of tribal people of Northern Thailand since then.

Doi Wiang, the Lahu village located in Fang district of Chiang Mai province, about 180 kilometer north of the provincial city of Chiang Mai, is the home of 30 Lahu basket weavers. They grow annual crops of rice, beans and chili for their consumption and most of the time they are making variety of basketry which the sell through Thai Tribal Crfats for the family income. About 80% of their annual earning come from sale of baskets through Thai Tribal Crafts.

The traditional clothes of the Hmong are adorned with examples of the embroidery skills of Hmong women. Samphan Craft (Hmong) had begun in 2000 to help preserve these skills by developing products for the international market.

Huay Laeng (Hmong) Village

The project is based in Huay Laeng village in the Wiang Kaen district of Chiang Rai province on the border with Laos, 325 kilometers north east of Chiang Mai. Orders from Thai Tribal Crafts help provide full-time employment to three women and supplementary income to up to 100 others in Huay Laeng and surrounding villages.

Village women with minimal education have learned to adapt their traditional skills to the needs of the international market, quality control, basic book keeping skills, and the day-to-day running of a business.

While under the auspices of the Samphan Hmong Church, and helping pastors’ wives support their families, the project is not limited to helping Christian women. From the outset the project has been self-supporting rather than mission-subsidised. Sales to Thai Tribal Crafts provide the basis for the on-going long term viability of the project under local leadership.

Ban Phui, Karen handicraft producers in northern Thailand

Bangkok BIG fair was not a good result for us

As usual, we, Thai Tribal crafts fair trade prepared well before joining Bangkok BIG Fair in last April 20, 2010 and things were ready to meet the importers and visitors during the fair. But unfortunately, there were very less people and low sale during the fair if we compare to last year. The sale was drop to 2/3 of total sales and couldn't even meet new buyers' contact. The hardship of country situation is really effected to the economy of most industry zone. Nevertheless, it's uncontrollable and we are expecting a better result in the coming event which will be properly in August/September 2010.

Mien or Yao, Handicraft producers from northern Thailand

Mien or also called Yao is one of the hill tribes living in northern Thailand. Among Mien different villages, Ban Mae Kae village has been working with Thai Tribal Crafts Fair Trade since 2003 in producing high quality handmade. Today, their handicrafts products become one of the best sellers in both local and export markets.

Some of Mien handicrafts producers

This village is situated in Ngao district of Lampang province about 190 kilometers east of Chiang Mai. It is a Mien (Yao) village composed of 80 houses with a total population of 400 people. The village is accessible by car in dry seasons and only four-wheel driver car can reach the village. The adults who can speak and understand Thai are less than 60% but children and young people can read and write as they can go to the local government schools for formal education.

Grand opening ceremony of Fair Trade Shop Chiang Rai

The grand opening ceremony of Fair Trade Shop Chiang Rai, join program of Thai Tribal Crafts Fair Trade and Akha Crafts Center, was held on 5th April 2010 at 6 pm local time. Though about 40 quests were expected to attend the ceremony previously, about 100 respected quests from NGOs, Missionaries, Volunteers and local people were welcomed during the real ceremony.

The program was started with welcome speech by the founder of Akha Crafts Center followed by opening prayer, ribbon-cutting, introducing to some staff and great dinner and finished around 8 pm local time.

Thai Tribal Crafts has been working with more than 58 villages and Akha hill tribe village, Ban San Pa Sark is one of them. It is located at about 250 kilometer northeast of Chiang Mai city. The village has 80 households with a total population of 250 persons, 190 female and 60 male. The population is composed of 15% Christian, 25% Aminist and 60% Buddhist. 20 percent are illiterate, 90% understand Thai and less than 40% can write. Handicraft Producers: Ban Pa Du - Akha village in northern Thailand

Ban Pa Du is an Akha village located at about 240 kilometer northeast of Chiang Mai city. The village has 92 households with a total population of 530 persons, 280 female and 250 male. The population is composed of 45% Christian, 45% Pantheist and 5% Buddhist. Seventy percent are illiterate, 30% understand Thai and less than 30% can write.

Majority households have not enough land for cultivation, only 10% of the whole villagers have land for agriculture and wages of labor is the main source of income for the village. TTC has worked with a group of 5 men who make the Akha musical instrument called "Akha Jews Harp" since 1985. Beginning of this year the village women requested Thai Tribal Crafts to help them, and we surveyed the village in June 2005 and decided to help the women by providing work of making embroidery pieces which we use to make several products, such as Purses, Bags of different sizes and design of export quality. There are 21 women with whom we are working now.

Handicrafts producers: Ban Pa Mai Pattana Village, Thailand

Ban Pa Mai Pattana, one of the producer groups of Thai Tribal Crafts Fair Trade, is a Christian Akha village located at about 185 kilometer east of Chiang Mai city. The village has more than 52 families in 48 households with a total population of 235 persons, 90 female and 80 male and 65 youth and children. It is a relocated village and villagers came from the near by mountain called Doi Luang.

The Department of Forestry in Thailand announced Doi Luang as the National Park and the Akha villagers living in the forest were moved from their village to this place in 1992. Each family was provided a piece of land ( approx. 800 square meters) for residence and another piece of land ( approx. 2 acre) for agriculture. Villagers grow pineapple. Hill Tribe People in northern Thailand and their handicrafts

There are mainly 7 hill tribes people such as Akha, Hmong, Karen, Lahu, Lawa, Lisu and Mien who are living in northern Thailand though there are very few number of Kachin and some others. Most of the hilltribe people love nature and prefer to live on the mountain side peacefully.

Traditionally the tribal people have supported their families by engaging in slash and burn agriculture, which required them to move their village every few years in search of new fields when old ones lost their fertility. It is now no longer possible for them to continue this semi-nomadic lifestyle, as there are no new places to move on to.

Today, they are trying support their family by selling their rich culture and skillful in handicrafts. They can make different kinds of handmade products and each patterns or products has its own interesting story.
